Geographical and historical data
The island of El Hierro is the westernmost land of the European continent, being a reference route for planes and ships that cross the Atlantic every day. Its maximum altitude is 1500 m, at the Pico de Malpaso. The surface area of the island is about 150 km2. Although it is small, its orography gives us the sensation of being on a small continent, where all climates prevail throughout the year.
The island was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2001.
Tourist information
Forest

The central part of the island is immersed in an immense forest of pines, giant beeches and junipers.

Lajiales

In the south-western part of the island there are whimsical patterns of petrified volcanic lava, known as lajiales.

Valverde

The capital of the island is an old town located between ravines that give it a peculiar style, with the 17th century church of La Concepción and the ethnographic museum La Casa de Las Quinteras standing out.

Valle del Golfo

It covers an extension of more than 15 km from the Mirador de La Peña to the Mirador de Bascos in the north-western part of the island.

Both viewpoints must be visited to contemplate their extraordinary beauty; just below the viewpoint of La Peña are the Roques del Salmor, where the Giant Lizards of the Island of El Hierro are found; just below is also the primitive settlement of Guinea.

The whole of the Valle del Golfo belongs to the municipality of Frontera and along the coast you will find the small bathing coves of Las Puntas, La Maceta, Los Sargos, Charco Azul and finally the Balneario Pozo de La Salud.

La Restinga

For the visitor it is probably the ugliest part of the island, where uncontrolled self-built urbanism has led to misunderstood development. Nevertheless, it’s good to enjoy a fish meal and go diving or spearfishing in what are probably the best waters in the world.

On the other side of the harbour, on the western side, is the Marine Reserve of El Mar de Las Calmas, where you can swim in the famous Cala de Tacorón.

Tiñor. Árbol Santo

Near the picturesque village of Tiñor, in the centre of the island, is the Garoé, a sacred tree of the Bimbache (the first inhabitants of the islands) whose leaves distilled water due to the phenomenon of horizontal rain.
